SYLVIE KIGINI OF BURUNDI

This woman was the first female prime minister in Africa and the first acting president both of Burundi between 1993 and 1994.

Much as circumstances pushed her into the position of acting president, she was an appropriate candidate for Prime Minister of Burundi. An Economics major, she has since settled into life as a consultant after handing over in an election held in June 1994.

As president and prime minister, she initiated and completed measures to make life easier for the women of Burundi.

She has survived coup d’etat and civil war. She is a strong woman.
